The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe ; pdbe.org) is a founding member of Worldwide Protein Data Bank (wwPDB ; http://www.wwpdb.org) organization that manages the Protein Data Bank (PDB). Realising the challenges faced by the wider user community in accessing and exploiting structural data, PDBe has focused on the following major areas –
• Improving data quality for entries in the PDB and enriching structural data with annotations to provide biological context
• Implementing efficient data-discovery mechanisms
• Intuitive and consistent data presentation
We have developed a powerful query system that allows users to not only query structural data but also shows the “best structures” for a given protein, ligand complex or Pfam sequence family using the validation information available in the wwPDB validation reports. The entry information is made available via a PDBe RESTful API that provides unified access to the PDB and EMDB archives. The value added annotations on data quality and up-to-date cross reference information from the SIFTS resource is also made accessible via the RESTful API to support large scale data analysis. The information is also made available at the PDBe website via an intuitive and interactive user interface. In this presentation, I will present our efforts to fulfill our mission of “Bringing structure to biology” by making structural data accessible to wider scientific community
